Summer is around the corner and let’s be honest… I’M SO EXCITED!! Longer daylight hours, the smell of sunshine and sand, beach days, boat days, winding down highways with the top down and the music loud, Aperol Spritz’s, dining alfresco, lush greenery everywhere… I can literal see it! But the question is, WHERE?
Now, while I’m a girl that wants to literally go any and everywhere on this planet, I have to acknowledge that there are just some places you should be sure to visit in the summer. Considering summer is fast approaching and school is ending soon (with the exception of those who are already out) you may still be wondering where to take your summer vacation. If you're still struggling to pick a place, fear not, I've got you covered! Now that being said, keep in mind, I’m not a “resort” kind of gal. I like exploring, and learning, all the while having an incredible time. So, let’s dive into some great destinations to check out this year and many years to come!
ICELAND
I purposely decided to kick the list off with Iceland because I feel like it’s the exact opposite of what most of you may consider a summer destination. Let me explain why that’s not the case in the slightest.
While you may not get sandy beach days and jet skiing afternoons, Iceland is absolutely breathtaking and offers an entirely different experience during the summer, as opposed to its chilly winter months. The daylight hours are incredibly long (if you go in June or July you may get the chance to experience the midnight sun!), hiking trails open up, the puffins are wondering about, and it’s whale watching season! If you stay city side, there are festivals, live music, and packed restaurants within Reykjavik. And despite what you may be thinking, you’ll still get to do glacier tours, see the waterfalls, go snorkeling, ride ATV’s, go horse backing riding, and even visit a lava cave in the summer months. What more could you ask for? The weather typically sits between 50-60° but has been known to reach both higher AND lower temperatures, so if you’re willing to sacrifice some 90° days for incredible landscapes, adventures, and memories, you will certainly love Iceland!

INDONESIA
Indonesia will always make my travel list due to its vast archipelago consisting of over 17,000 islands. Insane right? It’s comprised of a wide variety of ethnic groups, cultures, religions and languages. That makes for TONS of places to see, but let’s talk about just a few. The most known destination in Indonesia is Bali, and considering that I personally am MADLY in love with Bali, I will be the first to tell you that it is a must visit. From the people, the culture, the waterfalls, the rice fields, the temples, and SO much more, Bali should be on your list. But Indonesia also has so much more to offer. Islands like Java, Raja Ampat, Lombok, Sumatra, and Komodo are some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Don’t assume that all of these islands are the same and don’t offer something unique, because you’d be incorrect.
Bali’s next door neighbor Java, is drastically larger and home to the major city, Jakarta, on the west. The island is sprawling with national parks, 121 active volcanos, temples dating back to the 9th-century and much more. An archipelago itself, Raja Ampat is a wonder! It’s known to have the highest marine biodiversity in the world and healthy coral reefs so it’s perfect for divers and snorkelers alike. And if you’re up for it, you’ll even have an opportunity to check out the Lenmakana Stingless Jellyfish Lake. Sumatra on the other hand is full of lush jungles, diverse wildlife, waterfalls, the largest volcanic lake in the world, and various indigenous groups. Then we have Komodo. It’s the home to, you guessed it, the Komodo dragon! In order to protect the island and its inhabitants, you can’t stay on Komodo, however, it is still well worth the visit. From the large lizards themselves, pink beaches and crystal waters, Komodo is definitely a must see if you’re in the nearby area. Lombok is perfect for those seeking soft white sand beaches, surfing, and even snorkeling. The island is full of beautiful coconut palm trees and mountains fit for trekking! And if you’re there, you may as well hop on over to the nearby Gili Islands each of which offer a slightly different experience! Indonesia has tons of destinations for you to explore this summer, and we haven’t even scratched the surface.

SPAIN
If you’re no stranger to a Euro summer, then Spain is a no brainer. The weather is perfect, the beaches are thriving, the culture is rich and the food is delicious. Whether you’re spending your days in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Mallorca, Seville, or Ibiza, each destination is bound to offer something unique and memorable. However, if you have the time to explore more than one city, I highly recommend you do so!
Barcelona is going to offer history, culture, architecture and delicious food. Places like the marvelous Sagrada Familia will make your jaw drop, while the Mercat de la Boqueria, will have your mouthwatering for delicious foods, while keeping you occupied for hours with over 300 food stalls. Madrid on the otherhand is going to offer the same with a major nightlife/party scene for those of you seeking a good time. Be sure to visit Puerta del Sol in the heart of Madrid or areas like La Latina which are vibrant and full of history but offer a thriving night life and delcious tapas for those wanting a mix of it all. Mallorca and Ibiza are going to be your go-to for those of you wanting bask in the sun and sea! Mallorca is going to lean more dreamy, small-town and romantic. However, if you want to take some time away from the beautiful beaches, go check out the unique Castell de Bellver or Alcudia Old Town. Ibiza is going to call to the partier in you, while offering up natural beauty in droves. Spend your days on the beach, or hop on a boat to go snorkeling or see some hiddens coves. Seville on the other hand is full of romantic allure, stunning architecture, history and flamenco dancing! Hop in a rowboat and ride down the canal at Plaza de España after marveling at the beautiful architecture and learning about its history. Or visit the Catedral de Sevilla, the world's largest gothic cathedral, that was once a mosque. Spain is a treasure that shouldn’t be missed.

TANZANIA
This East African country is perfect to visit in summer as it’s dry season, making it less humid but still warm with the likelihood of little to no rainfall. Whether you’re seeking a soul-stirring safari experience, a cultural awakening, or a tropical island getaway, Tanzania may be the perfect destination for you. Mainland Tanzania is excellent for those wanting to immerse themselves in wildlife and culture. Home to the famous Serengeti, you can seek out the Big Five while surrounding yourself in the stunning vast plans or feast your eyes on the impressive Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Victoria. If culture and new experiences are what you’re seeking, visiting the Maasai, Sukuma or Hadzabe tribes may be ideal. An opportunity to learn about the indigenous tribes is an eye opening experience that you’ll treasure for a lifetime. If a city escape is something you can’t miss while you travel, Dar Es Salaam is filled with vibrant markets, museums, historical sites, beaches and more.
Then… enter Zanzibar. This tropical Island is so much more than crystal waters and white sand beaches and really offers something for everyone. Areas like Stone town have deep roots where you can learn about the East African slave trade and even visit some of the sites that are still standing. If you make your way through the narrow streets you’ll get the pleasure of tasting some traditional Swahili food that will make your mouth water. Or make your way to the opposite coast and visit Paje or Jambiani for kite-surfing, or hop on a ngalawa and set sail at sunset! Areas like Nungwi & Kendwa also have a rich history but also offer a vibrant nightlife, snorkeling, skydiving, swimming with wild dolphins and much more. If adventure and relaxation is what you’re after then look no further. But in reality, it’s the incredible people of Tanzania that make this destination so inviting. Greetings like “Jambo!” or reminders that everything is ok, with phrases like “Hakuna Matata” will leave you with a lighter and brighter soul that you’ll carry for a lifetime.

PERU
This South American country is a beautiful destination to visit during the summer, as it’s dry season and offers tons of opportunities to explore its various wonders. I feel like it’s only fair to start with Machu Picchu. Hiking the Inca trail is a must for those physically capable and looking to experience this newly added Seven Wonders of the World. Dating back to the 15th-century, Machu Picchu is easily considered one the greatest achievements on land and deserves to be seen first hand. This alone is enough to send people in droves to this beautiful country.
Machu Picchu aside, Peru is also known for its variety of landscapes. From the Andes to the Amazon to the deserts, Peru will leave you in awe. Areas like Huacachina, where you can go sand boarding or ride the dunes at sunset in buggies, are unlike many other places in the world. The lagoon sparkles at night under lights that surround the oasis, in the middle of sand dunes that seem almost unreal. If that’s not enough, hop on the train to explore the landscapes of Peru that you would never be able to access by foot. The experience can be a unique one depending on what type of ticket you book, with some of the cars having live performances and access to a small balcony to feel the wind in your hair while you wind through the mountains. Don’t forget things like Rainbow Mountain or the Salt Maras north of Cusco. If you need a break from adventure, chill out in the city of Lima. A culinary haven, Lima is rich in history, and vibrant neighborhoods. Take the time to explore not only delicious food markets and stalls but immerse yourself in the history of Peru’s ancient civilizations and indigenous groups which make up about 45% of the country’s population. Peru will leave you with not only a new take on some of the worlds past but also an experience you can’t wait to share with others!

MEXICO
Before I begin, let me say… I LOVE Mexico. That can be proven by the 6 or 7 times I’ve been there (don’t quote me, I’ve lost count). Now with that said, I’ll be honest and tell you…no matter where you’re thinking of visiting it’s most likely worth it in my opinion. Mexico has an incredibly rich culture and a complex history. The people are incredible and the food is phenomenal. And because the country is so large, every city/state is so different. It’s been easy for me to pick out a few cities to discuss with every other country I’ve mentioned so far, but that won’t be the case here, this one is hard. We’re talking Mexico City, Oaxaca, Jalisco, Tulum, Cozumel, Puebla, Cancun, Yucatan, Acapulco, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta… the list goes on and on.
Whether you’re seeking sun rays by the beach, swimming with dolphins and whale sharks, learning about the Aztec empire, trekking to a waterfall, learning to make some incredible dishes, or so much more, Mexico is the perfect place. Then you consider the Yucatan Peninsula where you can explore Chichén Itzá, Las Coloradas and some of the most breathtaking cenotes that will have you marveling at the possibilities of this incredible planet we live on. Or visit Mexico City which is home to the famous Frida Kahlo museum as well as many others. You can explore the marvelous streets of Coyoacan and eat delicious street food. Make your way to Jalisco and sip on some of the finest tequilas or visit Bacalar to swim in some of the clearest water you’ve ever seen. I can really talk about Mexico all day but I won’t. So, add Mexico to your list this summer and see for yourself exactly why it’s so incredible.

NAMIBIA
Namibia isn’t talked about enough in my opinion and I want to change that. Due to its geographical location, the summer months are actually their winter months, so it makes for a lovely time to visit as it’s typically quite hot. Around this time of year the weather is rather pleasant with clear skies, although the evenings may be chilly. Now with that said Namibia can easily be considered one of natures many masterpieces. It’s where sand dunes meet the sea, the salt lakes are pink, the sky looks like it’s littered with diamonds, and where you’ll meet the people of Africa’s oldest surviving culture. If you’re looking for adventure, culture, and a look at how incredible the earth is… look no further.
Head into the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, to visit the enormous sand dunes in Sossusvlei. The sand is bright orange, appearing almost red depending on the suns intensity, and are known to be the tallest sand dunes in the world. At night, especially in June & July, when there is little to no cloud interference, you’ll see the brightest of stars of the incredible Milky Way. Explore the now abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop, that has since been wiped out. The structures are now full of sand making it hard to envision that it was once a functioning town. If you want to marvel at nature once more, check out Fish River Canyon, which is second to none other than the Grand Canyon, making it the largest canyon in Africa and is estimated to be around 350 million years old. If that’s not enough, The Pink Lake near Walvis Bay will leave you enchanted, because yes… it’s actually pink! If wildlife and culture are more your jam then look no further than the Kalahari Desert. Home to incredible safari game drives by day and starlit skies by night, here you’ll also find the opportunity to visit an indigenous San community. Where you can learn about their way of life and history, hear (and try to learn if you’re up for it) one of Africa’s oldest click languages, the Khoisan, and as well as the many socioeconomic challenges they have been facing. The options feel almost limitless in Namibia!

SWITZERLAND
Have you ever just looked at Switzerland? Who wouldn’t want to be there? The landscape is so inviting, it’s actually unfair. The natural beauty emanating from this country, especially in the Alps, is down right insane. Lush green meadows in the countryside, with snow-capped peaks in the background, the Glacier Express whizzing by, sparkling lakes just waiting to be jumped into… picture it! Whether you want a peaceful countryside vacation or a city escape, Switzerland is the perfect getaway this summer.
Zurich and Geneva are ideal if you’re seeking a bit of city meets country. Either Lake Geneva or Lake Zurich will be calling your name for swimming, paddle boarding, or wind surfing under the warm sun. Or you can spend the afternoon exploring Old Town (there’s one in both cities), seeing the iconic Cathédrale St-Pierre, or getting in a little retail therapy. Zurich is full of festivals and unique events, that will offer you insight to their beautiful culture. Check out some museums or go bike riding on The Uetliberg Mountain or feast on delicious chocolate if you’ve got a sweet tooth! For a more relaxing, peaceful getaway, hop on a train or take a road trip and make your way to the Swiss Alps. The views on the journey alone will make the trip worth it, so be sure to pack your camera. But take the time to sightsee a bit by biking trails, kayaking or paragliding. If that’s not your vibe be sure to check out some of the local festivals and don’t forget to enjoy the local cuisine and delicious wine.

MADAGASCAR
If the movie alone didn’t make you want to visit this fascinating island, I’m not sure what will! Nestled in the Indian Ocean, just off the Southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar is home to the fascinating Baobab trees, delicious vanilla and its incredibly unique wildlife (umm… hello lemurs!).
Kick your trip off by visiting the Avenue of the Baobabs, because let’s be honest, you won’t find them anywhere else. The strip is lined with these 800 year old fascinating giants, and is a symbol of their cultural heritage which will leave you in awe. Want a peek into Madagascars wildlife? Endemic to the island, the lemurs of Madagascar are truly a selling point to this destination! First of all they’re adorable, and can’t be found naturally anywhere else in the world. And if you want a bit more, take a guided night walk through Andasibe Mantadia to spot chameleons! Ready for stunning beach views you’ll never forget? Head to Nosy Be and prepare to be stunned. The water is various shades of blue and you’ll especially get to experience it first hand if you walk across the sand bar that emerges during low tide and to take it all in. Check out the beaches in Île Sainte-Marie and add snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding and more to the list while you spend hours soaking up the sun and sea! And if you’re lucky you’ll even spot some humpback whales while you’re there. Don’t forget to try some of the delicious street food and local dishes like romazava, the national dish of Madagascar!

BARBADOS
You may be thinking… isn’t it technically hurrican season in the Caribbean in the summer? Yes. You are correct. However, I’m a sucker for visiting some places during rainy season because that doesn’t mean it’ll rain all day (but do your research first!). And that can be the case with Barbados. The island is typically less busy due to most people being reluctant to visit due to the fear of bad weather. But don’t let that lead you astray. This is the perfect opportunity to learn a bit about the islands history, explore the capital of Bridgetown and do some things you may not have taken the opportunity to do otherwise. Once the sun peaks back out, make your way to one of the islands many stunning beaches to soak up some rays and get a tan!
Carlisle Bay is perfect if you’re looking for swimming and scuba diving or if you’re out for a different adventure, Harrison’s Cave may be up your alley. Then if it’s a Friday, make your way to Oistins Fish Fry for delicious flavor-packed seafood and live music with locals and tourists alike. If you’re a drinker and a fan of rum (or even if you’re not YET), make sure to check out the distillery tour at Mount Gay. Here, you can not only explore the 300 year old historical site, but you can also taste the signature rums, and even learn to make cocktails! Whether you’re yearning for a delicious culinary experience, a look into its rich history & culture, a beach day or five (wink!), Barbados is the will leave you anxious to return!

ITALY
I don’t think Italy needs much introduction. It’s famous for not only its incredible cities & history, beautiful language, delicious foods, perfect wines, stunning landscapes but so much more. Italy's rich history is reflected so beautifully in each and every region, making it a perfect destination for any and every traveler, especially in the summer. While Rome may be the most famous and obvious choice, places like Cinque Terre, Silicy, Venice, Tuscany, Milan, The Amalfi Coast, Puglia and plenty others are just as (if not more) inviting depending on the experience you're seeking!
Rome is going to call to the history buff in you as it's riddled with museums, landmarks and incredible architecture. Places like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon are just the beginning. At let's not even considering missing Vatican City, including The Sistine Chapel, because it's simply not an option in my opinion. Rome's ancient history makes for not only a fascinating and eye opening experience but also an enchanting, timeless one that you'll never forget. Make your way to Tuscany to go wine tasting, and marvel at the lush landscapes. While you're there head to cities like Florence or Sienna to feast your eyes on phenomenal art and architecture, and watch the sunset from the Piazzale Michelangelo. Seeking a bit of romance? Look no further than the incredible city of Venice. Explore the city by taking a ride on a gondola throughout one of the many canals, especially the Canal Grande or visit St. Marks Basilica. Sip on Aperol Spritz's, or local wine and feast on cicchetti! Coastal regions like Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast will offer a vastly different experience. Cinque Terre is perfect for those seeking a more charming, laidback vacation. Hop on the train explore the colorful villages or go hiking if that's more your vibe. If luxury is more up your alley, The Amalfi Coast is going to offer exactly that. Fine dining, beaches, boat days on the Mediterranean, nightlife... The Amalfi Coast has it all. Sicily has an incredibly diverse landscape paired with a rich history and culture different to other regions in Italy. The ancient ruins, beaches, and cultural cuisine are just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to visit Scala dei Turchi for a truly unique "beach day". Puglia has been getting talked about more and more lately, and it's not hard to see why. It offers charm, history and a little drama. Learn to make burrata or visit a local olive oil farm! Take the afternoon to visit Castel del Monte, the unique trulli houses in Alberobello or relax by one of the many breathtaking beaches. Regardless of which region or city you decide to visit, Italy is a dream destination for every kind of traveler. And hey ... you never know... you may fall in love with more than just the country!

Zanzibar sounds dreamy!
